Tools, fastening and fire protection
Hilti develops and manufactures technology for construction and building maintenance: drilling and chiselling tools, anchor and fastening systems, measuring devices and scanners, fire protection systems, construction chemicals and software. The company became known for the electropneumatic rotary hammer.
It was founded in 1941 by the brothers Martin and Eugen Hilti in Schaan; the headquarters are still there, in the Principality of Liechtenstein. The shares are held by the Martin Hilti Family Trust, whose purpose is to preserve Hilti as an independent family business. Sales are largely direct: staff advise on the building site, supported by the company's own stores.
